The inaugural Road to the Worlds Waypoint Series was a 3-year International 12 Metre yacht competition held from May 2017 culminating with the 2019 12mR World Championship, July 8 – 13 at Newport, RI. Twelves racing at specific “Waypoints” designated events in North Europe, South Europe and the Americas were awarded points for both their participation and performance. At the culmination of the 28 regatta series, the 12mR yacht with the greatest number of points overall was named the Waypoints winner. Details of the series events and scoring are posted below.
2017-2019 Waypoints Winners
First: Courageous (US-26)- 102 points
Second: Challenge XII (KA-10)- 99 points
Third: Victory ’83 (K-22)- 98 points
The winner of the first Waypoints to the World Series was the Americas fleet’s Courageous (US-26) raced by a syndicate of owners comprised of Co-Skippers Ralph Isham and Alexander Auersperg and crew members Steve Glascock and Ward Marsh. Read the full Press Release.

The competition was open to all 12 Metre yachts with valid Measurement Certificates (including Appendix E Certificates) and current ITMA Membership status at the time of each Waypoints event in which they participated. All 12mR yachts worldwide were eligible to compete at any Waypoint event, whether within or outside of their home fleet. The schedule of events are shown below.
THE WAYPOINTS SCORING SYSTEM:
2017 & 2018, each yacht will receive:
- 5 participation points for each Waypoints event in which they compete PLUS
- 1 performance point for each yacht that finishes behind them in their division (Vintage, Traditional, Modern or Grand Prix)
2017 & 2018 Scoring Example:
A Vintage 12mR finishes first in fleet of 9 at 2017 event, she would be awarded:
5 participation points + 8 performance points = 13 Waypoints
The second place Vintage 12mR in this fleet of 9 at same 2017 event would be awarded:
5 participation points + 7 performance points = 12 Waypoints
2019, each yacht will receive:
- 10 participation points for each Waypoints event in which they compete PLUS
- 1 performance point for each yacht that finishes behind them in their division (Vintage, Traditional, Modern or Grand Prix)
2019 Scoring Example:
A Modern 12mR finishes first in fleet of 7 at 2019 event, she would be awarded:
10 participation points + 6 performance points = 16 Waypoints
The second place Modern 12mR in this fleet of 7 at same 2019 event would be awarded:
10 participation points + 5 performance points = 15 Waypoints
To earn WAYPOINTS, each yacht must:
- Hold a valid 12mR Measurement Certificate
- E Certificate yachts are also eligible
- Be a current member of ITMA and
- Be scored within 12mR Rule
